Michael Schwandt is one of the most dynamic contributors to choreography and movement in Los Angeles. His extensive body of work can be seen across the board in television, commercials, corporate industrials, music videos and live special events, while crossing all genres of dance. As Stage Director on many projects, Michael contributes to the overall look of a project influencing style, costume, lighting, musical arrangement and set design.In 2005, Bowl Games of America contracted Michael to choreograph The Beach Boys televised performance at the Liberty Bowl with 200 dancers. With the success of this performance and Michael’s skill at working with large numbers of performers, BGA has since hired Michael to choreograph the highly-watched BCS Championship Bowl, Valero Alamo Bowl, Champs Sports Bowl, Pacific Life Holiday Bowl and LeAnn Rimes performance at the Liberty Bowl.In 2006 and 2007, Michael took live stage shows under his belt that included directing and choreographing Jambalaya” a Caribbean live spectacular for Wyndham Hotels in the Bahamas, working on performances by Cyndi Lauper & Kristine W at the closing ceremonies of the Gay Games at historic Wrigley Field andchoreographing production numbers for Norwegian Cruise Lines newest, largest oceanliner “The Pearl.”In 2007 Michael directed aerial performers utilizing bungees, swings and hammocks for Sheryl Crow’s concert at the MGM Grand Arena in Las Vegas. Michael went on to stage dance and aerial numbers for the La Dolce Vita Charity Concerts in NYC and London, one of which included a vertical tango in which performers danced up and down a 100 ft. wall, counterbalancing one another. It was around this time that Michael’s work caught the eye of Nettwerk Management who was looking for new concepts for Avril Lavigne’s forthcoming The Best Damn Tour, for which Michael was consulted.In 2008, Michael became the new choreographer and stage director for the Miss USA and Miss Universe TV specials where he was challenged to give the choreographed portions of the show a fresh look. Michael had the foresight to convince NBC and The Miss Universe production to take a chance on an unknown artist that hefirmly believed was the future of pop music. Michael’s intuition paid off when on July 13, 2008, he directed and staged Lady’s GaGa’s first ever television performance to the soon-to-be #1 hit “Just Dance” ultimately seen by millions around the globe. Since then, Michael has gone on to direct and choreograph performances by Kelly Rowland and David Guetta, The Veronicas, Flo Rida, John Legend, Trace Adkins, Kevin Rudolph, Boys Like Girls ad Finger Eleven on the two TV specials collectively through 2010.In 2010, because of his vast experience in so many genres and mediums of dance, Michael was sought out to help develop the format for and oversee choreography for a new dance competition show, Your Chance To Dance on CMT. As Supervising Choreographer, Michael was tasked with casting and supervising 14 on-camera choreographers, conceptualizing all 50 performances for the season while overseeing choreography, wardrobe, set and hair/makeup for each episode. Michael also caught the eye of Capitol Records music video dept., who wanted a unique way for Katy Perry to perform the forthcoming “Peacock” single from the album Teenage Dream. Michael conceptualized a fully programmable electrical light wire costume in the shape of a peacock that was originally intended for live promo performances, and will now be incorporated into the music video and tour!Late 2010, Michael was the first guest judge invited to be on So You Think You Can Dance Europe (Ukraine Series) and was also a guest choreographer on the show, creating both group and duet routines for the series. Michael also branched off into the Latin market by taking Universal Latin’'s artist Ninel Conde into an entirely new direction with the extravagant music video “Vivir Es Morir De Amor.” Michael continued his work in the Latin market by then creating a new flash mob style music video for acclaimed Latin Grammy Award-winningartist and producer, Juan Luis Guerra’s new single “Lola’s Mambo.”Additionally, Michael has choreographed live corporate industrials for DirecTV, PUMA, Skechers, Jafra Cosmetics, Charles Schwab and has worked on commercials for AT&T, MGM Mirage, Palm Treo, Land Rover and Mitsubishi. His additionalmusic video work includes FOX feature film theme songs for Garfield 2, Fantastic 4- Silver Surfer, Dragonball: Evolution and a host of dance artists like Che’Nelle, Brian Anthony, Uniting Nations and Taxi Doll.A graduate of the University of Texas Radio-TV-Film Dept, education is very important to Michael. He continues to give back to the dance community by nurturing and educating aspiring dancers via guest master classes all over the world. He was on faculty at the world-renown EDGE Performing Arts Ctr. in Hollywood for three yearsand is a guest faculty on the Tremaine Dance Convention and Hollywood Vibe tours where he connects with young dancers across the US, mentoring about realistic expectations in professional dance. Other guest faculty credits include: Debbie Allen Dance Academy, Broadway Dance Center Japan, Sydney Dance Company, Melbourne Ministry of Dance, Manila School of Film & TV, Western Australian University of Performing Arts, Pineapple Studios London, Harbour Dance Vancouver, MBS Toronto and Manhattan Dance Project.
